The Junior Mathematical Congress (JMC) is a congress for pupils from all over Europe in their last years at school. During this meeting the participants present the results of a mathematical project, which they have worked on. These talks about arbitrary mathematical topics constitute the main focus of the congress. However, meeting pupils from many different nations is an essential part as well.
The venue of the JMC 2008 will be Jena, the second largest town of Thuringia. The hometown of Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss is situated in the heart of Germany. Science and research have a great tradition here – in 2008, Jena will bear the title Stadt der Wissenschaften (City of Sciences) and the university is going to celebrate its 450th anniversary. Moreover, the year 2008 will be the Year of Mathematics in Germany. So, the JMC will take place in a worthy setting.
The JMC 2008 in Jena
The 8th JMC will take place from August 3rd to August 9th 2008 in Jena (Germany). Before the event you are asked to find a mathematical project and work on it. The results will be presented in a roughly 45-minute talk to all the other participants of the congress. The talks do not need to be new. If you have already worked on a school project, an article for a competition, or the like, you can certainly resort to it.
All participating pupils should submit a report (which should not exceed 10 pages) of their project for publication in the conference volume. Furthermore, you are asked to prepare a presentation for the conference.
Please note that the language of the congress will be English that means the report as well as the presentation have to be composed in English. Certainly, group work is also welcome and it does not matter if the talk is finally given by one or more pupils.
For application to the congress, please send us a short abstract (not more than three pages) containing the most important ideas and results of your work.
You can also apply if you want to take part without preparing a presentation, but you will only get an invitation if the capacities allow.
What is the Junior Mathematical Congress?
The Junior Mathematical Congress (JMC) is a congress for pupils, created in 1992 as an event associated with the European Mathematical Congress, which takes place every other year (2008 in Amsterdam). Since then, it has taken place seven times (sometimes as part of the supporting program of the International Mathematical Congress) generally close to the main congress. The following cities did host the JMC:
- 1992 Paris
- 1996 Miskolc
- 1998 Potsdam
- 2000 Miskolc
- 2002 Miskolc
- 2004 Stockholm
- 2006 Targu Mures
Now the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena invites to the next JMC.
The participants are pupils from all over Europe in their last years at school. The participants' talks about arbitrary mathematical topics constitute the main focus of the congress. However, meeting pupils from many different nations is an essential part as well.

The Organization Team
We are Die Wurzel (German link only), a registered non-profit association of students and postgraduates of the University of Jena, in close cooperation with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The translation of our name is 'The Root'. We have a 41-year-tradition of supporting talents. Our sphere of action comprises mathematical camps for pupils at least twice a year and the publication of the monthly periodical bearing the same name.
